Tim,
I do agree an unsuccessful bid by anyone in need of spectrum will not help their cause with Charlie, but in the end if you need spectrum and you do not own it, you will pay out the nose for it later. Expecting Charlie or anyone else to be benevolent, just is not going to happen.
So what that will do is force whoever needs the spectrum the most to pony up and take it away from the rest.

How can Inmarsat continue to use its satellites if Lightsquared goes ahead with any of its plans? I would have thought that if the ground-based LTE signals were strong enough to overload receivers listening in the GPS band, they would have a similar effect on receivers listening in spectrum even closer to that in which Lightsquared hope to operate. If the Deere augmented GPS doesn't work, then why will any other signal from the Inmarsat satellites be 'audible'? And isn't some of the stuff in that spectrum for things like emergency location?

It is certainly the case that the precision agricultural equipment (into which farmers have invested over $3B) would have problems because it receives augmented GPS signals broadcast from Inmarsat's satellites. The RTCA report said that there could still be some problems for aircraft if LightSquared used 2x10MHz in the lower band.

Whether there are more bids for TSN will be determined by whether or not anyone feels they can outbid DISH. All MetroPCS (or the other first lien holders) would achieve by bidding unsuccessfully would be to put money in Harbinger and Solus's pockets, while alienating someone (Charlie Ergen) that they may want/have to deal with later.

Seems like Kirkland is still of the opinion that the Inmarsat frequencies will still create interference with GPS....
